This past Thursday at Café Scientifique, Dr. Adelsheim, a child/adolescent and adult psychiatrist, shared some promising new approaches to mental health care. He discussed the international and national movement towards building early detection and intervention models for serious mental illness. Through the development of community outreach efforts and addressing community stigma, young people at risk for serious mental illness are accessing care earlier, leading to improved outcomes in mental health, employment and educational success. Dr. Adelsheim showed how these models are now expanding across California and other states in an effort to build a more effective mental health support system for our young people.

Café Scientifique is an international network of informal groups that brings scientific debate into local communities. Check it out here. Stanford Blood Center joined the Café Scientifique community in Fall 2007 with the goal of fostering medical and scientific learning, and raising awareness within our community about the Blood Center.
