The San Jose Sharks have been giving hockey fans something to cheer about for twenty years now. But did you know they give patients in local hospitals a reason to celebrate? That’s because the Sharks Foundation supports blood donation through annual blood drives. We’ve been partnering with the Sharks since 2007, collecting 849 units of blood to date! Our February blood drive is expected to bring in up to 450 donors, in addition to getting sign ups for bone marrow and organ donation.
"The Sharks Foundation has had tremendous success partnering with the Stanford Blood Center for our annual 'Save a Life' drive," Sharks Foundation Manager Jeff Cafuir said. "Both the Sharks Foundation and SBC are committed to making a positive impact in our community. Each year, more and more of our fans are willing to donate and we hope this trend continues in the future."
Our last Sharks blood drive, held on January 23, 2010, brought in 338 units of blood. That’s our current record of donations at a single blood drive! We’re confident that our partnership with the Sharks Foundation will continue to be a record-breaking success.

LifeScan has been sponsoring high school and community blood drives since the summer of 2000. It started with a handful of high schools and has grown to 34 high schools, three colleges, two universities, and six community blood drives, for a total of 45 drives a year. In 2010 LifeScan encouraged 10,538 donors through their sponsorship of movie tickets and Baskin Robbins pint-for-a-pint coupons, as well as popcorn and bags for high schools and selected community drives.
Mary Lou Stuart manages LifeScan's Community Relations programs including the company's blood drives. "LifeScan's Community Relations program strives to improve the quality of life in our local communities and our partnership with Stanford Blood Center exemplifies this commitment. Our support for community drives is a wonderful compliment to our employee on-site blood drives and is just one of the ways we live Our Credo as part of the Johnson and Johnson family of companies."
There is no other company in the Valley that provides Stanford Blood Center with such amazing support. We are so thankful to have LifeScan as a partner in saving lives.

Stanford Blood Center is fortunate to have established a solid relationship with athletic store Sports Basement in what our Marketing Manager John Williams calls, “a textbook example of how a partnership can work for both parties.” Sports Basement donates gift certificates to our blood donors that can be redeemed for athletic supplies at local Sports Basement stores; we really appreciate the donations, and are excited to give Sports Basement the opportunity to reach out to potential customers.
“It’s been well-received by those who donate blood, and we are just glad that we can give them something that adds value to their sense of community involvement,” remarked Sports Basement’s Marketing Manager Robert Chang. “We believe it’s important because blood donors are greatly needed. We view our contribution as an important program because any one of us, our friends, family, or co-workers can be affected by shortages of blood.”
