Financial Information
Stanford Blood Center is a not-for-profit community blood center. As part of the Stanford University School of Medicine, our tax status is based on the University's tax exempt status as an educational institution [501(c)(3)].
Stanford Blood Center currently has an annual operating budget of $45 million as well as research grants of more than $2 million (direct costs only). The operating budget is supported by blood products and clinical testing services provided to area hospitals, clinics and physicians, most notably, Stanford Hospital & Clinics, Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, El Camino Hospital, Palo Alto VA Medical Center, and O'Connor Hospital.
We are proud that the cost of our blood products and testing services remain among the lowest in the state, while our quality and service continue to be among the highest.
Stanford Blood Center is dedicated to minimizing costs to patients but acknowledges that the ultimate cost of blood can be high.
- Costs are incurred in the handling and testing of each product.
- Additional costs are associated with special services such as designated or autologous donations or shipping blood products out of the area.
- Hospitals also add charges for their handling and/or additional testing of blood products before they are transfused to patients.
