» PL8LETS 4 LIFE
April 7, 2008: Who needs boring, random numbers and letters when you can display your interests on a license plate? Loyal platelet donor Gail Waldo sent us this pic of hers:

» SBC has Tour fever!
On February 17, 2008, The Amgen Tour of California Prologue took place in Palo Alto. Our area was treated to some of the world's best cyclists and greatest athletes as they prepared for the week-long race down to Pasadena. SBC not only provided a base location for the "Breakaway From Cancer" event for Amgen on the 10th, but also had a blood drive and informational booth at the Prologue event on the 17th. Thanks, Amgen, for letting us be a part of all the cycling excitement!

» The Sharks help us take a bite out of blood shortages
On February 8, 2008, SBC took the show on the road and held a mobile blood drive at HP Pavillion before a San Jose Sharks game. Donors won lots of cool prizes, got to schmooze with Sharks players, and got to watch the morning skate. We hold the Sharks Drive once a year, and it's one of our most well-attended. This year was no exception. Nearly 200 people came out to donate blood for their community's hospitals!

Thank you to all the donors and Sharks players who gave their time and blood for a good cause!

This is supposed to be a Sharks Drive... so what's with all the horsing around?

» Breakaway From Cancer!
On February 10, 2008, Stanford Blood Center's Hillview Donor Center location was the host of the Amgen Breakaway From Cancer charity ride. From SBC Hillview in Palo Alto, the 25-mile course followed cycling friendly roads and bike lanes around the popular “Portola Loop.” The finish line was back at SBC.
11-time Tour de France veteran George Hincapie participated in the charity ride, which benefitted non-profit partners The Wellness Community and the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship.
Special thanks to our neighbors at TIBCO, who allowed us to use their lot for overflow parking.

Excited riders line up at the starting line at our Hillview location.
George Hincapie graciously signs posters.
The first wave of riders heads out to the course.

» Grand Opening
On February 2, 2008, we opened our newly-remodeled Mountain View Donor Center. The renovation added 1200 square feet to the existing space. This larger, remodeled space has more chairs, and will help us increase collections so we can keep up with the growing needs of local hospitals.

Buck Cox is one of our star volunteers and donors. In his lifetime, Buck has donated 10 gallons of blood! Buck also volunteers for 5 other causes. Looks like the Buck doesn't stop here...

»
Carol Tompkins and her daughters Taylor, Carly, and Jansie enjoy refreshments in the Canteen after donating blood. What a great way to spend quality time with your family AND give back to your community!

Anita and Dorothy, charge nurse and main registrar of Mountain View, made sure everything ran smoothly at the Grand Opening. Thanks for all you do!

» Is it hot in here?
On February 1, 2008, the Palo Alto Professional Fire Fighters came in to our Hillview Donor Center to give blood. Their high spirits and giving attitudes were truly an inspiration. As if they don't do enough for their community—ya know? We loved having them here, and welcome them back any time.

This hot crowd of Palo Alto Fire Fighters brought great energy to our Hillview Center.

» Cafe Scientifique
On January 29, 2008, Stanford Blood Center hosted a Café Scientifique discussion between Climate Studies Expert Dr. Stephen Schneider and our local community. Dr. Schneider led a candid talk about his work studying the global climate, and discussed how it must be addressed by taking a look at risks associated with current behavior. His talk became even more interesting when he described how he took those same risk-assessment principles and applied them to his course of treatment for cancer. Stay tuned for the video from his talk. It'll be posted here.

Our second Café was a success despite the weather!

» Donors Meet Recipients
From December 26 - January 4, we offered blood donors the rare and fulfilling experience of meeting a few blood recipients. Each of the recipients is extremely grateful for the blood products they recieved during their treatment, and were excited about meeting blood donors. We at SBC thoroughly enjoyed having them here, so many thanks to Jeannie Callan-Smith, Ron Preston, David McNally, Mike Wu, and Meghan Masterson for being so wonderful!
